Anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) is a type of polyacrylamide (PAM), which is widely used for industrial wastewater treatment. It has electronegative properties due to the functional groups of sulfonic, phosphoric, or carboxylic acid present in it. The anionic nature of APAM makes it more effective in treating wastes containing positively charged particles.
One of the main applications of APAM is in sugar wastewater treatment. In the sugar industry, large amounts of wastewater are generated during production processes that contain high levels of organic matter, suspended solids, and other contaminants. APAM can be used as a flocculant to help remove these impurities by causing the particles to aggregate and then settle out of the wastewater.
Similarly, in industrial wastewater treatment, APAM is used as a flocculant to aid in the removal of suspended solids, oil and grease, heavy metals, and other pollutants. It can also be used to improve water clarity and reduce the hardness of treated water.
Mechanism of Action
The primary mechanism through which anionic polyacrylamide operates is flocculation. In water treatment, suspended particles such as colloids, silt, organic matter, and other impurities are often negatively charged, leading to repulsion and preventing natural settling. Anionic polyacrylamide introduces long polymer chains with negatively charged sites. These chains bridge between particles, neutralizing surface charges and forming larger aggregates called flocs. These flocs are heavier and settle more quickly, facilitating easier removal through sedimentation or filtration.
