For powder activated carbon, it is generally produced from coal or wood raw material. Wood activated carbon is usually used in food, beverage, and medicine industry.
Coal based activated carbon originates from coal that has undergone a steam activation process. It has three different types of raw material base material - bituminous, anthracite, & lignite, consisting of micro, meso and macro pore structures. During activation, millions of pores are created on the surface of the carbon, increasing the total surface area. This unique pore distribution makes coal based activated carbon ideal to remove small to large molecular structures.
