What is Aluminum Sulfate?
Aluminium sulfate is a white rhombic crystalline powder with a density of 1.69g/mL (25ºC). In the paper industry as rosin gum, wax emulsion and other glue precipitate agent, water treatment as a flocculant, but also can be used as foam fire extinguisher retention agent, manufacturing alum, aluminum white raw materials, petroleum decolorization, deodorant, some drugs raw materials.
1. Industrial products are grayish white flake, granular or block, with light green due to low iron salt, and yellow surface due to oxidation of low iron salt. The coarse product is gray - white fine crystal structure porous.
2. extremely soluble in water, aluminum sulfate can not be dissolved in pure sulfuric acid (just coexistence), in sulfuric acid solution and sulfuric acid together dissolved in water, so the solubility of aluminum sulfate in sulfuric acid is the solubility of aluminum sulfate in water.
3. Aluminium Sulfate is not easy to weathering and lose the water of crystallization, relatively stable, heating will lose water, high temperature will decompose into alumina and sulfur oxides.
Applications of Aluminum Sulfate
- Used as paper sizing agent in the paper industry to enhance the water resistance and seepage resistance of paper;
- After being dissolved in water, the fine particles and natural colloidal particles in the water can condense into a large flocculent, which can be removed from the water, so it is used as a coagulant for water supply and wastewater;
- Used as turbidity purification agent, also used as precipitation agent, color fixing agent, filling agent, etc. In cosmetics used as anti-sweat cosmetics raw materials (astringent);
- In the fire protection industry, foam extinguishing agent is composed with baking soda and foaming agent;
- Analytical reagent, mordant, tanning agent, oil decolorizing agent, wood preservative;
- Albumin pasteurization stabilizer (including liquid or frozen whole eggs, white or yolk);
- Can be used as raw materials for the manufacture of artificial gemstones and high grade ammonium alum, other aluminate;
- In the fuel industry, it is used as precipitant in the production of chrome yellow and lake dye, and also plays the role of fixing color and filling agent.
