The backwashing method is a process used to clean filter media, including filter balls.
When filter balls become clogged with debris and contaminants, they can no longer effectively filter water.
Backwashing involves reversing the flow of water through the filter, which dislodges the debris and forces it out of the filter.
To backwash filter balls, follow these steps:
Turn off the pool pump and close any valves leading to or from the filter.
Open the filter's backwash valve or position the multiport valve to the "backwash" setting.
Turn on the pump and let it run for 2-3 minutes, or until the water in the sight glass or drain hose runs clear.
Turn off the pump and close the backwash valve or position the multiport valve to the "filter" setting.
Turn on the pump and let it run for a few minutes to redistribute the filter balls.
Check the filter's pressure gauge and backwash again if the pressure is still high.
It's important to note that the frequency of backwashing will depend on the size of your filter, the amount of debris in your pool, and the pump's flow rate.
Generally, filter balls should be backwashed when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above the normal operating pressure.
