Few things ruin a dip in the pool more than dirty water filled with particles and filth. Everyone wants a pool that' s dive-ready all year round. But it can be challenging when you get more than your share of leaves, heavy rain or swimmers.
However, how do we choose the right swimming pool filter material? This article will analyze three popular swimming pool filter materials for you.
Sand
It' s designed to trap particles in the 20- to 100-micron range. When it' s at its most efficient, you won' t be able to see particles in your pool. However, when it' s not working as well as it can, your pool will still show some particles.
Sand Filter Concerns: This filter often becomes mudballed, which is when it contains small clumps of oil gunk. It can also become "channeled," meaning water runs straight through without being filtered. And it' s probably not your best option if you have hard water because it calcifies with calcium deposits, turning the sand inside into sandstone.
Glass
Glass filter media can remove particles as small as 5 microns in size, which keeps your pool water healthier and clearer. Compared to sand filters, which require backwashing every 1–2 weeks, or cartridge filters, which need to be cleaned monthly, glass media only needs to be backwashed every 2–3 months. The duration of the backwash is also shorter because glass is smooth and allows the easy passage of water.
Glass Filter Concerns: Glass filter media is more fragile than sand so handling and installation is more difficult. Breaking during installation can leave sharp glass fragments and be a hazard. And you have to make sure the media is evenly distributed in the filter to avoid performance issues.

Filter Ball
Pool Filter Balls Using 100% polyester fiber material. The fiber ball filter media can intercept tiny suspended solids that are difficult to settle and remove. The filtration rate is 3.5 times higher than that of traditional sand filter media and can capture particles as small as 2 microns. It is lightweight, easy to use and take out, and convenient for backwashing Their high adsorption capacity and filter strength ensure your pool water is crystal clear and free of impurities, allowing you and your family to enjoy clean and clear water.
Glass Filter Concerns: Compared to traditional granular filter media, it is more expensive. If you buy poor quality filter balls, they will fall apart after 2-3 uses.
